Positive and Empowering Birth Experiences From Blissful Births Moms
Alana Shiloh - 4 Nov 2016
I have known Maggie for more than 11 years, but our friendship reached a whole new and very intimate level during my pregnancy. I will forever treasure the memories of the day I went into labour. It was such an empowering experience. Magdeleen was beside me every step of the way and through every contraction. She coached me through different positions and empowered my husband to support me by massaging by lower back and educating him about the different stages of dilation I was achieving. We had a beautiful water birth and my husband delivered our daughter with the help of our Midwife while Maggie was behind me, holding my hand and whispering positive birth affirmations into my ear for encouragement and physically serving me by keeping me cool with a damp cloth.
Maggie respected our birth wishes and shared in the vision for our birth and lotus delivery.
The love and compassion she has for mothers in labour is unsurpassed and truly exceptional. I have since referred all my pregnant friends to her and will continue to do so.
I have to also admit that I initially thought a Doula is a gimmick and a nice-to-have, but after labouring and from first hand experience, I have become an advocate for Doulas. They are an essential member of your birth team and postpartum journey.

During a routine consultation with my Midwife, I was told that I was already dilated and that labour is imminent. Living 2-hours away from Genesis Maternity Clinic, Magdeleen invited us into her home for the night. She ran me a milk bath and we had dinner with her family. My water broke during the night; she supported my husband as he helped me to breath and stay calm.
I was in active blabour for almost six hours and Magdeleen ensured that our music was playing, birthing affirmation on the wall and she fed me strawberries. Leilani was born Saturday morning 05:52am. We felt the love and could see the passion in everything Magdeleen did for us. She made me feel that I was important and she shared in the joy we experienced after the birth. She remained available even after the birth for advice and support. My successful breastfeeding journey is due to Magdeleen and my Midwife's support. She made my birth experience special and I will forever cherish her in my heart.

I have known Maggie since university, she was the roommate of one of my best friends and soon she was a treasured friend herself. When she became a doula it was the first time I had ever heard of the profession despite having a natural birth with my daughter 2years earlier at another hospital.
Maggie has always been a fountain of knowledge about babies, breastfeeding and birth so when she explained to me what a doula is I knew that this was a passion that had been a lifetime in the making, Maggie will be the very best doula you could ever hope for.
During the birth of my son Maggie made the contractions so much better with some kind of doula magic, she calmed me down when I started feeling overwhelmed, she kept me focused and breathing when I wanted to give up. For me who has known Maggie for 10 years I got to know this whole new side of her and I am so happy I decided to have a doula. They take care of you and give the midwife the room she needs to focus on the birth and baby.

The moment I met Maggie, I knew she would be the perfect Doula for me. I immediately felt a connection with her and knew that she will be the right person to support me and my husband in welcoming our little boy into this world. I appreciated the fact that Maggie was intent on helping me have the birth experience that I wanted to have and that she supported me in using HypnoBirthing.
Maggie was a great source of comfort during my labour. It felt like she instinctively knew what I needed, even if I didn't say anything. Every hug, hip squeeze and encouragement made my labour so much easier. As a result, I was able to have my unmedicated birth just as I planned and hoped for. My husband and I also appreciated the support after the birth. I will definitely be using Maggie's services again in the future.

The moment she walked into the room, I knew I was in good hands. Maggie was there to support me and hubby, she massaged my back and explained every step of my labour process. When I was 4cm dilated my amazing doula decided that we should walk around Zoo Lake and went along with us. It was lovely and casual and we had a calming conversation. She was very supportive and a crucial part of the birthing team. While I was in the tub, she kept me comfortable and wiped my face with a cloth. Unfortunately after more than 30-hours of labour, complications set in and I had to have an emergency c-section. Still, Maggie was there every step of the way. It was certainly the best day of my life!

Maggie is the best doula ever. She does not only have the skills and knowledge required to be a doula, but she has passion for her job that makes her go the extra mile. I am so grateful to Maggie for her prenatal and post natal support. I thought that doulas were only required when one plans to have a natural birth, however Maggie proved that doulas are a must have even if one has a caesarian section. She educated me on the procedure, helped me to prepare everything before we went to hospital and was at the hospital the entire time to support me. Afterwards she helped me to express milk, and checked in with me continually during my stay at hospital. Once our baby came home, Maggie helped with my breastfeeding issues. In fact she let me stay at her house for an entire day to help me with breastfeeding and to let me rest while she took care of baby. I don't have enough words to thank her for what she has done. Maggie for President!!

Magdeleen brought a powerful, but playful experience to my birthing and breastfeeding journey. She lightened the mood during my labour which calmed my Husband's nerves as well. I would highly recommend using Magdeleen as a doula and would use her services for my next birthing journey!

By the grace of God our beautiful baby boy was born 24 August 2017. This is our first child. When I went in to labor I did not know what to expect but our Doula Magdeleen was there to guide us every step of the way. She was my pain medication. And got me through every contraction. Thank you for the guidance and support throughout my pregnancy and the birth. I think every mother giving birth needs a doula.

I met Maggie at the Genesis Open day while pregnant. I was still contemplating whether I require a Doula, as I will be attempting a VBAC with a midwife as my primary care provider. I kept postponing, thinking I will manage on my own, until my midwife highly recommended I get a Doula. I immediately thought of Maggie at Blissful Births, and the lovely chat we had on our first encounter. We met with her, discussed my pregnancy, birthplan and history, after which hubby was also convinced of her important role in the birth of our baby. When labour started, Maggie was available even though I phoned in the middle of the night. We went to her home, where she supported and encouraged labour in a comfortable setting, keeping busy and distracting you from labour pains. She communicated with my midwife, and kept them up to date regarding my progress. She was constantly supporting me through every contraction, giving advice and massages whenever and wherever I needed them. She kept giving words of encouragement, and really made me feel much more empowered. During the final stages of labour, she was right there beside me, ready to jump into the birthing pool if it seemed necessary. Every step of the way, she was the one who pushed me to push on. After birth, she made sure my baby is safe and happy. She handed our baby to daddy for skin to skin, while assisting me with post-birth, taking a shower and cleaning up afterwards. Advice still flowed freely, and afterwards, she assisted with baby's first feed and lactation. She stayed and supported us for hours afterwards, and made sure both mommy and baby are doing well.
